Background

A senior manager contacted Amplify due to experiencing a "breakdown" following 12 months of increasing stress. Symptoms included anxiety, difficulty concentrating, and an inability to disconnect from work. The manager attended an appointment on the day she contacted Amplify. 

Challenges

  • Balancing Work and Home: Feeling as if she was failing her family and her work by not knowing what to prioritise. 

  • Boundary Setting: Difficulty declining unnecessary meetings and requests.

  • Unhealthy Habits: Poor diet and lack of exercise contributed to a negative cycle.

  • Confidence Erosion: A previous manager with a conflicting work style had diminished her confidence.

  • Lack of Personal Development: No time for planning or learning.

  • Feeling Undervalued: Lack of role clarity led to doubts about her relevance and value.

Intervention

  • Creating Space for Recovery: Highlighted and helped achieve a routine that included rest and boundaries.

  • Empowering Decision Making: Encouraged blocking time in her diary for deep work and practising saying no.

  • Building Positive Dialogue: Discussed and highlighted impact of negative self-talk and how to handle this.

  • Improving Communication: Stressed and supported transparent communication with her manager.

Outcome

The manager adopted a much healthier routine focused on enhancing well-being and performance. More open engagement with her life partner and her work peers strengthened support and collaboration. Discussions with her manager led to greater autonomy and a stronger sense of value within the team, empowering her to align better with both personal and organisational goals.
